Dementia: Strategies for Communication & Support for Individuals & Their Families

This course describes changes in communication that happen during the early, middle, and late stages of dementia and discusses strategies for effectively communicating with individuals living with dementia. Tips for assisting people with dementia in completing activities of daily living, behavioral interventions for de-escalating dementia related behaviors, and strategies for effectively working with families will also be examined. This education is appropriate for direct care staff in long-term senior care settings.

Allison Oja

Allison Oja is the Director of Community Support and Education with Minnesota Hospice. She holds a Master of Science in Thanatology (the scientific study of death, dying, bereavement and loss) from Marian University and bachelor’s degrees in psychology and religion from Millikin University. In addition to being board certified in Thanatology, Allison is also a Master Transpersonal Hypnotherapist and Reiki practitioner. Her mission in hospice is to normalize discussions surrounding death and dying, as well as to increase knowledge and provide resources about end of life throughout our communities.
